This past weekend was fantastic. We got stormed off Round Top due to low visibility. We didn't even make it to Elephant's Back due to low-vis and high winds. I decided to cut my losses and Split-Board Steve was kind enough to drop me off at Kirkwood. Just as I arrive Kirkwood’s Power Station caught on fire so the lifts stopped. They did get them back up running again so I got to make about 45minutes of skiing with Toro on chair 6 (cornice express).
Sunday we awoke to massive avalanche control closing the highways and Kirkwood was "overwhelmed" by so much snow they couldn't even turn the chairs for the people stuck there. Most of the other resorts in the Tahoe Basin were closed if not for avalanche control then for wind. Sierra at Tahoe gets my vote for Most Protected Ski Area. They were open and the snow was fantastic. We skied at Sierra at Tahoe Ski Resort. It was great. Found lots of fresh snow all day long, and was able to get onto some 50-60deg pitches that were completely virgin. It was a beautiful thing. I skied it twice!
